A deed poll is the document that links your old name to your new one. It is what DVLA, HM Passport Office, your bank and your employer ask to see before they will update their records.

How it works
- Tell us four things. Your current name, your address, your date of birth and the name you wish to be known by. About five minutes.
- We prepare and check it. Your deed is drawn up and checked before it is issued.
- Print, sign, witness. Sign once in your former name and once in your new one, in front of two witnesses who are both there at the same time.
Before you begin
- For adults and anyone aged 16 or over, changing their own name.
- Not for changing a child’s name — that needs the agreement of everyone with parental responsibility, so please contact us instead.
- Cannot be used to avoid a debt or other obligation, to escape criminal proceedings, or to mislead anyone.
- Whether an organisation accepts it remains subject to their own identity and evidence checks.
Common questions
Do I need to enrol it at court?
Not usually. An unenrolled deed poll is accepted by DVLA and HM Passport Office as evidence of a change of name. Enrolment is not generally required simply to change an adult’s name, though a few organisations still ask for it.
Who can witness it?
Two people aged 18 or over, both present at the same time. For the strongest evidence, use independent adults who are not relatives, do not live at your address and are not otherwise involved in the change.
Will the Passport Office accept it on its own?
The deed establishes the link between your names, but HM Passport Office will ordinarily also want to see documents showing the new name in use — a driving licence or bank statement, for example. The guidance we send with your deed explains what to gather.
What if I need several original copies?
Sign as many identical originals as you need in one sitting, with the same witnesses on the same date. A photocopy of a signature is not an original deed, so organisations asking for an original need one that was signed by hand.
